At the same time, Rodriguez notices that this family is no longer close to him, realizing he was not an immigrant. Consequently, he grows embarrassed as his parents and his relatives know that forgetting â€Å"his own language.† Rodriguez’s relatives feel he does not belong, due to his lack of Spanish, in their culture. They even call him â€Å"Pocho†, a word used to define Mexican-Americans who, in becoming an American, forgets his native society. This in general forces Rodriguez to part ways with his culture and family. Education does not bring separation between Rodriguez and his family, but it also allows him assimilate into the American society. He credits learning English and his schooling with helping him develop his sociability. The success of Rodriguez in school is due to his enormous effort he puts on his studies and his constant habit of reading and writing. Rodriguez believes that a primary reason for his success in the classroom is that he can’t forget that schooling is changing him because he is becoming a member of society. Moreover, Rodriguez feels integrated in society as his educational level rises. It is then when Rodriguez takes his first steps toward achieving a public identity. He knows with a public identity he will be able to have a personality that is going to represent him among people. Having a public identity will allow him to become more sociable as well. Rodriguez’ youth seems awkward mainly because of the tension between his private family life and his public life outside his house until he acknowledges he is a member of society thanks to his schooling. Due to his educational efforts, Rodriguez gains involvement within society. The efforts lead him to attend great universities such as Stanford, Columbia, and Berkeley. As a scholar student, Rodriguez perceives the world differently. Socialization is not a problem any longer since he feels his education permits him to have not only a personality but a right to be involved in social topics as well. Also, it is via his involvement and his social skills that Rodriguez understands issues regarding his character. His involvement within society lets him to have a voice that can be heard among people. That voice permits to speak with authority in society. When affirmative action takes action, benefiting Rodriguez, he is not able understand why he is being treated as a minority. He says that he cannot identify himself with the term â€Å"minority student† since he acknowledges in his early age that he forms part of the American society. Scholarships for Artistic Students 1. Purpose College is an important part in continuing education and is also the best time for students to hone their skills and become the best in their field as possible. Inclusion of support, both financial and mental, is instrumental in achieving a college education, and should be given in equal amounts to both athletic and artistic students. But each year, numerous athletes around the United States are offered college scholarships to recognize them for their talent and to encourage them to play at the university awarding the scholarship. At the same time, the same amount of equally artistically talented students are left to pay for college themselves because they are not offered as many scholarships as athletes are. This unfair and unequal distribution of scholarships is a threat to college education of artistic students everywhere. It is a problem that occurs at every university in the United States, including Iowa State University, and it is a policy that needs to be changed so that colle ge is an equally beneficial period for athlete and artist alike. 2. Scope In this paper, I will be comparing information about the athletic and artistic scholarships offered at Iowa State University. As I do so, I will focus on the difference in number, criteria, and cash awarded by these scholarships. I will discuss the needs for the change of this policy, the ideas I have of how to change it, the benefits that will result from changing this policy, and how to implement these changes. 3. History and Needs According to a list of scholarships distributed by Iowa State itself, a greater number of athletic scholarships are offered by the college than there are artistic scholarships. With scholarships available in every sport played at Iowa State, the chances that an athlete will receive a scholarship are much higher than that of an artistic student. In fact, according to the information given by Iowa State, it is five times more likely that an incoming athletic student will receive more scholarships than an equally qualified art student will. The reason for such a difference is that mostly general scholarships are offered to artistic students, and these scholarships are offered to all students, including athletes, thus making the competition and chances of receiving such scholarships much harder. The scholarships offered by Iowa State should be in equal amounts, especially those that are focused on specifically art and athletics.

Interpersonal Conflict in the Film Spanglish Essay

The film Spanglish portrays many examples of interpersonal conflict between characters. An interpersonal conflict is two or more persons having different views on a specific thought or idea. In the film one of the most noticeable conflicts occurs between Flor, the house keeper, and Deborah, the mother. The movie is based on the struggles of relationships, with others and with the characters within themselves. Flor’s personality and parenting beliefs conflict with Deborah’s, resulting in a personal and cultural minimal battle. The conflict between Deborah and Flor progress over time because Deborah is uptight and her irrational behavior is often upsetting both households. Flor speaks very little English when she starts to work for the Clasky family as their housekeeper on a daily basis. She does not mention that she has a daughter, named Cristina. The family has two children, George and Bernice, the famous chef father John, the alcoholic grandmother Evelyn, and the neurotic mother Deborah. Summer comes and Flor is needed at the Claskys’ summer home around the clock so Deborah asks her to live there with them. Unable to communicate well in English, Deborah finds a neighbor to interpret, Flor reveals that she is unable to maintain these hours because she has a daughter, so Cristina is invited to come stay with them. While living in their new home for the summer with the Clasky’s, Cristina interprets for her mother to communicate. She impresses Deborah, who begins to treat her like a daughter, taking Cristina shopping, getting her hair done, enrolling her in a private school, and showing her more love than she shows for her own daughter Bernice. Flor becomes unhappy when it appears that Cristina is influenced by Deborah, in part because she wants Cristina to keep in touch with her Mexican roots and working-class values, and partly because Deborah is overstepping her bounds. Flor objects to Deborah’s actions to John, who apologizes and explains to his wife that she cannot do these things for some one else’s child without permission. Flor begins to learn English so she can communicate better. She becomes closer to John, who is having difficulty with Deborah’s self-centered behavior. Flor quits and takes her daughter home, upsetting Cristina, who got along well with the Claskys. On their way home, she tells Cristina that she can’t go to the private school anymore either, upsetting Cristina even more; she screams in the middle of the street that Flor can’t do this to her and that her life is ruined. Flor loses patience with Cristina after she asks her mother for space. Flor explains to her daughter that she must answer the most important question of her life, at a very young age: â€Å"Is what you want for yourself to become someone very different than me? Cristina considers this on their bus ride home, and they make up and embrace. The film ends with Cristina as an adult, years later, acknowledging that her life rests firmly and happily on the simple fact that she is her mother’s daughter. Throughout the movie there are many examples of how different cultures have different values, and different people have different morals and ethics, and how two people can clash and have extreme conflict between them, to the point where it can affect others around them.
